“If you understand everything, you must be misinformed.”-

- Japanese Proverb

The topic of feedback has negative baggage, and for good reason. Giving Unsolicited Feedback and Inviting Feedback are not the same.

In a Harvard Business Review study of 51,896 executives, those who ranked at the bottom 10% in asking for feedback (that is to say, they asked for feedback less often than fully 90% of their peers) were rated at the 15th percentile in overall leadership effectiveness. On the other hand, leaders who ranked at the top 10% in asking for feedback were rated, on average, at the 86th percentile in overall leadership effectiveness.

The best leaders appear to ask more people for feedback and they ask for feedback more often. Rather than being fearful of feedback, they are comfortable receiving information about their behavior and performance from their bosses, their colleagues, and their subordinates.

Of the 3 core leadership skills, this is centerpiece of the TEAMALIGN process - Invite Feedback. Inviting Feedback uncovers and unlocks Opinions and drives needed Behaviors to achieve Targeted Results

How leaders engage in feedback unavoidably creates a range of conditions for how employees and cross-functional partners engage.

The emphasis is on Inviting Feedback. A heightened level of professional, open and transparent candor aids in breaking down silo mindsets. Inviting Feedback is a powerful Experience that directly shape Opinions.

Inviting Feedback provides insights for how to better align activities and tasks to Targeted Results. Invite Feedback provides a language and process for reducing friction and aids with resolving issues.

Invite Feedback is one of the three core Leadership Skillsets - and when coupled with with Reset Accountability and Engage Directs, each leader’s capacity can be elevated from being a good manager to an outstanding individual people leader that can align & mobilize a high performing team.

Leaders don't just change their thought process - the way they do feedback is flipped..
